Nearly 200 youth rugby players from 25 states and 6 countries, including AYR’s Colin Spencer, Willem Mandel, Dylan Forbes-Roberts, Richard Wofford and Barrett Stombock, gathered this summer at the United States Military Academy’s Anderson Rugby Complex for four intensive days of training and education about the country’s fastest-growing team sport.  Held from July 22-25, the Performance Development Camp featured a faculty of elite college coaches and players led by West Point’s Director of Rugby Matt Sherman. Other staff members included former college and high school All-Americans and members of Major League Rugby’s Rugby United NY. Colin Spencer, the oldest of the AYR group, stayed for the more advanced Competition & Analysis Camp over June 25-28.

Training in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid the summer heat, the campers developed both basic and position-specific skills, and spent additional time in classroom sessions devoted to fitness, nutrition, career planning, and mental performance.  Open house collegiate sessions were available for interested campers.  Each night the campers scrimmaged at West Point’s $8 million facility before bedding down in the college’s historic dormitories.
