Congratulations to the Georgia Select Rugby Academy and the 13 AYR athletes competing on the Middle School squad for placing second this summer at the South Regional Challenge Tournament at the Middle Tennessee State University rugby complex in Murfreesboro, TN. On day one, the Selects raced out to a 24-5 margin ahead of the Tennessee Tri-Stars before penalties and substitutions allowed the Tennessee squad to narrow the margin to 24-22 at the final whistle. In the second game of the day, the Selects took a forfeit from the Ohio Racers, who could not field a full 15-man side. Day two saw the Selects take on a very experienced Florida Jaguares side that had dominated earlier competition. When a yellow card for repeated infringements reduced the Selects to playing a man down, the Jaguares exploited the advantage to score three quick tries. The Selects drove to within a few meters of the Jaguares’ goal in the closing minutes of the first half, only to run out of time at the half. Back up to full strength in the second half, the Selects stayed close to the Jaguares but still gave up two tries to the very skilled and expansive Florida back line. Although the athletes would have preferred to win the championship, second place marks significant improvement from last year, and the exposure to higher-level rugby gave everyone a better sense of how they can improve. Congratulations again to the Selects, our AYR athletes on the squad and Coach Cram for an outstanding weekend of rugby!
